Though US Independence Day is a national celebration, nobody does it up quite like Texans do. As long as I can remember, my family has attended the Arlington, Texas 4th of July Parade. It is the largest parade of its kind in Texas and is the anchor to our Independence Day weekend celebration. In 2001, my husband and I were married in Arlington on the 4th of July. His wedding gift to me was a float that morning in the parade. Since then, my family has sponsored an entry in the parade - we...read more

Hi again, in my third blog I talked about my wife and I adopting a 12 year old young lady. On June 21st my wife flew up to the state of Washington to pick her up and bring her back home to South Carolina. My wife arrived in Seattle at about 11am and she picked our daughter up that afternoon. The lady from the adoption agency came by the hotel that evening to give us all of the appropriate paperwork such as the letter stating that our daughter was being placed in our home, the court papers saying...read more

Internship in Australia - Special Olympics National Games 2010
June 30, 2009
By: Second Lieutenant Matthew Riggs
It has been awhile since my last blog, I have been busy finishing up summer school and coordinating travel plans! For the last 5 days, I have been staying in Adelaide Australia for an internship with the South Australian Special Olympics. This blog will mostly be focused on that, to show that being an ROTC cadet, you have the opportunity to study or work abroad just like any other student if you plan ahead in advance, and stay on top of you course schedules. More than likely you won’t be...read more

Another great benefit of being associated with the Department of Military Science is being able to maintain a connection to the University and experiencing some pretty rare treats. Last night, my husband and I were on hand for The University of Texas at Arlington's Gala Reception for the 1895 and Carlisle Societies. UT Arlington started out as a military school for boys in 1895; its "military founding father" was James McCoy Carlisle. The event honored annual donors to the University and...read more

Here is my 30 second Army "Elevator Speech" (you know, the hypothetical "Here's what's important about me" pitch you would give to a stranger in the time it took you to get to where you were going on an elevator...): I'm an Army officer, a new mom, and come from a proud/humble family of patriots. I earned my commission through Army ROTC at The University of Texas at Arlington in 1998 and was commissioned as an Adjutant General Corps officer. Since then, I've served in such exotic locations...read more

My name is 1LT Josue D. Nieves. I am currently an Executive Officer (XO) in the Reserves. I joined the Army in 1987. You may be wondering: How is that someone that joined the military so long ago still a lieutenant? Well, when I joined the Army I was a Private (E-1). After four years on Active Duty I went to the Individual Ready Reserve (aka. Inactive Reserve). Soon as was itching for some action, and I joined the Reserves in Orlando, Florida, my new home. That was back in 1992. In 2004 I was...read more

Hi again, I just wanted to let you all know what life is like working in the Adjutant General School at Ft. Jackson, SC. Prior to being assigned to the AG Proponent/Leader Development Division at the AG School I was assigned to MTOE or Operating Force units, coming from the 1st Cavalry Division at Ft. Hood. At first it was hard to get used to working with all of the civilians here at the school, but as time has went on it has become easier. I was not used to having civilians in charge of mostly...read more

Okay people, I am here to talk about my second deployment to Iraq. We were there for 15 months this time and it was much different than the first deployment. I took over the Brigade Combat Team S1 in March of 06 and we deployed that October. We deployed to an area north of Baghdad and it was not a good area at all. Our S1 shop was responsible for deploying over 3,500 Soldiers within 5 days and this was minor task. I was on the advanced party so I could get everything setup on the other side to...read more

Okay World, I guess you are wondering what has been going on with me this week. I have to say that it has not been pretty. All the fried food, red meat, milk shakes and beer have caught up with me and now I have chronic acid reflux. I saw my Primary Care Provider at the local TMC and I was referred to the General Surgery at 121 Community Army Hospital in Seoul. I Barium studied was done and it was discovered that my acid reflux had gotten worse with possible acid damage to my throat and...read more

Okay world, I know that it has been a while since you heard from me, but here I am. Yes, I did survive Warriors Leaders Course. For those who think that WLC is fun, I am here to tell you that it is not, but I am no GI Jane either. I did not know that to expect going into the course. I knew that I was going to be in class the majority of the time and that the course was very structured as far as the time scheduling. At times I did think that I was in basic training again. I guess that is a...read more
